HERZOG & DE MEURON: Goetz Collection

The building itself was one of the two architects’ initial projects as young up and coming architects. With preliminary completion in 1993, the Goetz collection was later renovated and expanded upon from 2001-2004. The building itself is a very simple structure on two levels, with one part buried underground. The building is mostly made of reinforced concrete, birch wood, and translucent glass.

HERZOG & DE MEURON: Feltrinelli Porta Volta

The Feltrinelli Porta Volta is a famous building complex designed by the two famous architects. Finished in 2016, the 200 meter/650 foot long complex comprises of two pitched roof buildings with offices, cafes, restaurants, and many other multifunctional spaces. The two men got their inspiration for the design from traditional north-Italian, and Milanese, rural farmhouse look.

HERZOG & DE MEURON: CaixaForum Madrid

The CiaxaForum is an awarded winning art museum housed in the former Mediodía powerhouse, the two architects renovated and expanded on the structure in 2008, making it a city landmark. The rusted steel cladding and vertical-garden aesthetic make it one of the city’s most recognizable buildings. The most unique thing about this building is the covered ground plaza that houses a very open and sheltered space for visitors and pedestrians.

HERZOG & DE MEURON: De Young Museum

The De Young Museum was founded in 1895 by American journalist Michael H. de Young and has been inside the iconic building since 2005. Herzog & de Meuron designed a horizontal building with a clad perforated copper exterior. The renowned panoramic roof is a perfect gathering place for visitors of the museum to get an extraordinary view of the Japenese Garden of Golden Gate Park.  Lastly, The Tower, which has been regarded as the most iconic architectural feature of the building, is a vertical structure that is home to functional spaces and an observation deck.

Cotton Bowl

The Cotton Bowl has provided two electric weekends for me since 2017. The Cotton Bowl has provided me with some of the best college football in the past few years. The feeling of opening kickoff in that stadium is something I can not even describe. I am beyond excited to get back there this coming weekend and get to witness a good football team take care of a bad one. Thankfully this year our seats do not require binoculars so I can enjoy the atmosphere in all of its glory.

Bizzell Library

The Biz is a tricky one to describe. It’s almost like a love/hate relationship. Because on one hand, it’s a constant reminder of studying, school, and late nights. But on the other hand, I am very grateful and prideful of the time that I put in every time I step through those doors. The biz is a very comfortable and quiet place for me to get some work done. I have been lucky enough to find my own solid study and routine once I go there to study. So all in all the Biz is a positive memory and one of my favorite buildings on campus.

Physical Science Building

The physical science building has to be one of the only flaws in the campus architecture. I would use the same word to describe the design and my time spent there; Disappointing. The Physical science building handed me the first failed test of my college career freshman year. Sadly, from that point forward, the trend continued. This is why I am very glad that I do not have to spend any more time in that building for the remainder of my college career.

Couch Tower

My first impression of the tower wasn’t much. It’s tall, bulky, and plain with an interior to match. The rooms bring about a similar reaction, with twin xl beds that didn’t deserve a second glance and a bathroom that rivaled the ones on the second floor of the Biz. But despite all the disappointing characteristics, the tower brought me some of the best memories in my three years on campus. Couch brought me life long friends through my roommates and helped me get connected on campus in many different facets. Every time I pass by on my way back from class I am consistently reminded of the good times that I’ve had here on campus and forever grateful for my time spent here.
